Hysteroscopy is a procedure conducted using a hysteroscope to ascertain causes for intrauterine diseases such as heavy menstrual periods and cramping. A doctor looks inside the uterus to diagnose and treat causes of abnormal bleeding and other reproductive health issues. A hysteroscope is inserted into vagina to closely examine the cervix and uterus. Hysteroscopy is of two types, diagnostic and operative. It is an efficient and safe process to diagnose and deal with various gynecological issues and problems related to obstetrics, which include abnormal uterine bleeding, fertility problems and abortion.

The hysteroscope is equipped with a tiny video camera inside which gives a pictorial representation of the uterus. This allows your doctor to check for any abnormalities in the lining of the uterus. Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive intervention used in viewing and operating in the endometrial cavity from a transcervical approach, conducted by a gynaecologist. It can be used to treat several intrauterine and endocervical problems. Hysteroscopic polypectomy, endometrial ablation and myomectomy are a few of the commonly performed procedures done by surgeons.

When a woman gets a pregnancy terminated voluntarily from a service provider, it is called induced abortion. Spontaneous abortion is when the process of abortion starts on its own without any intervention. In common language, this is also known as a miscarriage.

Till 2017, there was a dichotomous classification of abortion as safe and unsafe. Unsafe abortion was defined by WHO as "a procedure for termination of a pregnancy done by an individual who does not have the necessary training or in an environment not conforming to minimal medical standards." However, with abortion technology now becoming safer, this has been replaced by a three-tier classification of safe, less safe, and least safe permitting a more nuanced description of the spectrum of varying situations that constitute unsafe abortion and the increasingly widespread substitution of dangerous, invasive methods with use of misoprostol outside the formal health system.

What Is Meant By ‘Emergency Contraception’?

Emergency contraception, as the name suggests is a way to prevent a pregnancy after a limited time of having unprotected sex. It may well be noted here that emergency contraceptive pills can only prevent a pregnancy, not end one. These pills should only be used if the regular birth control method has failed – for example a slip or breakage of a condom, missing oral birth control pills, or miscalculating the ‘safe days’. Preventing a pregnancy after a rape, or unwanted coitus can also qualify to be an emergency situation and an emergency contraceptive pill is highly recommended in such cases. Remember never to use them as an option of regular contraception or birth control method, and reserve the use only for emergency situations.

24 to 48 hours after consuming Mifepristone:

You are recommended to insert 4 tablets of Misoprostol (200 mcg) into your vagina within 24 to 48 hours after the intake of mifepristone. If you take misoprostol before 24 hours or after 48 hours, the medicine will not function properly. Hence, keeping the time in mind is very important. The best thing about Misoprostol pills is that they start working immediately after you consume. (3)

If you do not get bleeding within 3 hours of consuming Misoprostol then you may need to consult your doctor for further course of action.
